A first name and a surname sit beside each other on a form, but the public statistics behind them are fundamentally different. Treating them as interchangeable creates misleading results.
What the Census name tables measure
The 2020 Census name release is a national population snapshot. Its first-name table includes frequency and distributions by sex, race, and Hispanic origin. Its surname table includes frequency and broad race and Hispanic-origin distributions.
These are the appropriate sources for asking how many people reported a name in 2020. Names below 100 occurrences are not published individually.
What SSA baby-name records measure
The Social Security Administration publishes given names associated with Social Security card applications by year of birth. The national series begins in 1880 and now runs through 2025.
SSA data is exceptionally useful for timing. It shows when a name peaked, whether current use is rising, and which birth eras contributed most of its recorded history. It does not publish surnames, and summing every birth record does not equal the number of living people.

Why surnames require different caution
Surnames are inherited and shaped by family structure, migration, marriage, transliteration, and historical recordkeeping. A surname’s frequency cannot be interpreted as a baby-naming preference, and it does not have an annual popularity curve in the SSA files.
For genealogical research, frequency is a starting point rather than a family connection. Two people sharing a common surname may have no recent relationship, while spelling changes can separate branches of the same family across records.
Why our checker keeps the sources visible
We show “Census” beside living-name frequency and “SSA” beside birth history so that a user can see what each number represents without opening the methodology first. The distinction is small in the interface but central to an honest result.
Combining the names
A full-name estimate uses the Census frequency of each component and the 2020 resident population. It does not use the SSA birth total. The resulting number is then labeled as an estimate because no public government table counts every first-and-last-name pairing.
